Making candles at home can be incredibly relaxing and fun, especially with our DIY kits. But if you’re a beginner, you can quickly get caught up in small mistakes that affect the final product. In this guide, we’ll show you the most common candle making mistakes and how to easily avoid them. This way, your candle will not only look beautiful, but also burn properly and smell wonderful.
1. Wrong wax temperature
One of the most common mistakes is overheating the wax or pouring it at too low a temperature. Wax that’s too hot can ruin the fragrance, while wax that’s too low can cause an uneven surface.
Solution: With our kits, you get the exact temperatures for each wax. Use a kitchen thermometer and follow the included video instructions.
2. Too little or too much fragrance
If you add too little fragrance, the scent will be very mild. Too much fragrance can weaken the wax bond and the candle will not burn well.
Solution: Our recipes contain the optimal amount – between 8% and 10%, depending on the wax. Each bottle contains a specific fragrance content.
3. Wrong wick choice
If the wick is too big, the candle will burn too fast and smoke. If it is too small, the wax will melt in a tunnel – only in the middle.
Solution: All our sets contain the right cotton wick that matches the size of the pot and the type of wax.
4. Poor preparation of the container
If the container is not clean or not heated, the wax can separate on the walls and bubbles form.
Solution: Before pouring, warm the container with a hairdryer. Pour the wax slowly and evenly.
5. Impatience
The candle needs time to harden and "settle" in order to burn properly.
Solution: Let the candle stand for at least 48 hours or up to 7 days before lighting it for the first time.
6. Forgetting about safety
Heating wax without supervision or protection can lead to injuries or accidents.
Solution: Use a double-bottomed pot (bain-marie), do not leave the kitchen, work on a protected surface and do not work with children without adult supervision.
