How long do silicone moulds last, and how can you extend their lifespan?

Silicone moulds are extremely popular for candle making because they allow for precise and complex shapes, while being flexible and easy to use. However, even the highest quality moulds will lose their properties over time if not properly maintained.

How long do silicone moulds last?

The lifespan of silicone moulds depends on several factors, including:

  • Quality of silicone – higher quality means longer durability.

  • Frequency of use – moulds that are used daily will wear out faster.

  • Wax type – Some types of wax, such as paraffin, can be more damaging to silicone than natural waxes.

  • Proper cleaning and storage – care greatly affects lifespan.

When used properly, a high-quality silicone mould can last from 50 to 200 castings, and in some cases, even longer.

Tips for a longer life of silicone moulds

1. Don’t overheat the wax

Silicone is heat-resistant, but prolonged exposure to high temperatures can shorten its lifespan. It is recommended to heat the wax to the recommended temperature (usually 80-90°C) and not pour it too hot.

2. Carefully remove candles

Although silicone is flexible, rough pulling or twisting of the mould can cause cracks and deformation. Remove candles gently. Remove the wax from the silicone when it is firmly set, but do not leave it in the mould for more than 6 hours.

3. Regularly clean the moulds

After several uses, wax residue can accumulate on the inner walls of the mould, which can affect subsequent candles. Proper cleaning includes:

  • Rinse the mould with warm water and a mild detergent.

  • Remove wax residue by first heating the silicone with a heat gun

  • Gently wiping with a cloth (never use sharp sponges or brushes).

4. Proper storage

Silicone models are best stored in a dry and dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep them in their natural shape; do not twist them or place heavy objects on them, as this may cause deformation.

5. Avoid contact with sharp objects

Silicone is sensitive to cuts and scratches, so do not clean the models with sharp tools or knives. When removing wax residue, use a soft plastic spatula instead.

6. Avoid strongly scented and colored waxes

Some synthetic fragrances and strong colours can gradually affect the texture of silicone, so we recommend using natural fragrances.

Silicone moulds are long-lasting if handled properly. By gently removing the candles, cleaning them properly, storing them properly, and avoiding high temperatures, you can greatly extend their lifespan. This way, you will get the most out of your moulds and save money in the long run.
